The ‘International Day of Peace’ is observed on September 21 around the world. The day is observed and has been devoted by the United Nations General Assembly to strengthening the ideals of peace, through observing 24 hours of non-violence and cease-fire.

The theme for the International Day of Peace 2022 is “End racism. Build peace.” This day has been dedicated to the aim of making a new world free of racism and racial discrimination.

  • The International Day of Peace was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1981.
  • The General Assembly unanimously almost two decades later, in 2001, voted to designate the day as a period of non-violence and cease-fire.
  • The United Nations Association of Japan donated the Peace Bell in 1954. It has become customary to ring the bell twice a year: on the first day of spring, at the Vernal Equinox, and on September 21st, International Day of Peace.
